Visualization for public use

This thesis would focus on research focusing on how to get users consensus about the clarity of visual information provided in public spaces. Much work has been done on this by J. Nielsen on icons and R. Horn on visual language. In particular, an interesting case study for this has been signage at the airports. This thesis would have a concrete application space - Blindern metro station. Several types of visual information could be considered: from visual instruction set on the ticket machines to digital ambience art (possibly also representing some aspect of immediate environment such as number of people waiting) or short interactive games (while one waits). The goal would be to find a method for user testing that leads to improved shared understanding of visual information. One may try variety of methods: observation, user testing, usability testing, but also allowing users to redesign or co-design, or try more cognitive approaches.

Deeper understanding of computing for users

The International Computer Driver's Licence emphasizes skills in computer use, while deeper understanding is omitted. Poor understanding of the principles upon which software is designed makes it more difficult to learn new programs, to move from an application made by one vendor to another, and even to learn a new version of a product.

Two kinds of understanding that may enhance user understanding:

  1. Data structure and accompanying operations. Making the data structure explicite, eg the text flows and the style definitions in a text processor, the tables and data definitions in relational database application.
  2. The principles of software

Relevant theses: Investigating the concepts that users have, or experimental training where understanding is emphasized.
